FORMULA # 1 - PARA-TAN
FORMULA# 1) PARA-TAN A very unique tan designed specifically for taxidermy tanning but can also be used for fur dressing. PARA-TAN is a complex of polymerized aluminum salts that eliminates all the problems associated with alum tanned skins such as short shelf life, lack of stretch, poor fixation and lack of flexibility. PARA-TAN will not hydrolyze or cause deterioration, gives excellent stretch, will not wash out, has good hair setting ability and won't yellow.
RECOMMENDED USE:
NOTE: Percentages are based on drained shaved weight of skin. Use less of a percentage for a skin with long hair than a skin with short hair.
* STEP #1: REHYDRATION: Rehydrate skins in clear water with no more than 1/4 lb. of salt per gallon.
* STEP #2: SKIN PREP: (OPTIONAL) Use ENZOL B after rehydration. (See separate instructions.)
* STEP #3: PICKLE: To each gallon of water add the following: 1 lb. of Salt, 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. of Saftey Pickle, or 1 1/2 oz. of 85% Formic Acid or 3 oz citric acid.
NOTE: Other acids such as BASCAL S, vinegar, and citric acid can be used. Mineral acids such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acids are not recommended. The important thing is to maintain a pH of 1.8-2.2. Leave the skins in the pickle for 2 days or longer. After the first 24 hours in the pickle the skins can be shaved and then returned to the pickle for an additional 24 hours.
* STEP #4: DEGREASING: For skins such as bear, beaver, fox, raccoon, etc., degreasing should be done prior to tanning. Use KEMAL-4 or Kemsol Degreaser. (See separate instructions.)
* STEP #5: TAN: Add 6 - 8 % Para-Tan (percentage based on shaved drained weight of skin). For every pound of drained skin you will need 1 oz of Para-Tan. Example: 5 #'s of skin needs 5 oz of Para-Tan. To each gallon of tanning bath add 1/3 lb. salt.
NOTE: For proper penetration water should be 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Use only enough water for skins to move freely. Agitate periodically. Leave skins in solution for 24 hours then basify in tan. An average deer cape weighs 3-5 lbs. Use 3 oz.- 6 1/2 oz. Para-Tan per deer cape.
* STEP #6: BASIFICATION: Immediately add a small amount (approx. l oz per gallon) sodium bicarbonate or other neutralizing agent until a pH of 3.8-4.2 is reached. Leave skins in solution for 30 minutes and then drain well.
OILING: When the skins have reached a moisture content of approximately 20%, apply Tanning Oil #1 or Para-Soft tanning oil. (See separate instructions).
NOTE: PARA-SOFT Tanning Oil is a special multi-charged tanning oil designed to work with PARA-TAN. A moisture meter is recommended to determine moisture content.
